Baghdad to Open 12 New Bridges by 2025: Major Traffic Relief

Economic Developments – Baghdad

Bridge Construction Initiatives in Baghdad

The Ministry of Reconstruction, Housing, and Municipalities has announced plans to commence the opening of seven bridges in 2025, representing the remaining projects in the first package aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. Additionally, five new transient bridges over the Tigris River in Baghdad are also scheduled for completion.

Progress on Traffic Relief Projects

Nabil Al-Saffar, spokesperson for the ministry, indicated that the first package aimed at addressing traffic issues includes a total of 16 projects. To date, nine have been completed, with the remaining seven expected to be launched before mid-2023.

Upcoming Bridge Openings

Al-Saffar further elaborated that the five bridges crossing the Tigris River are projected to be opened in the latter half of 2025. These include the Al-Jadriya, Al-Sarafiya II, and Gaza bridges, as well as two parallel bridges designed to accommodate both inbound and outbound traffic on the suspended bridge, incorporating twin two-story structures.

Enhancements to Traffic Flow

One of the key projects set to reshape traffic dynamics in the capital is the new hoping bridge, which will facilitate two-way vehicle movement from Al-Tala’i Square to the Meeting Square. This initiative will integrate with strategic projects undertaken by the ministry, including the Al-Tobji and Al-Qallaji endeavors.

Catalysts for Increased Mobility

Al-Saffar noted that the Al-Bisrajjiyya Bridge is poised to serve as a new pathway for Rusafa residents, linking the suspended bridge and the newly opened bridge, ultimately connecting to the Baghdad-Youssefia route. This design aims to streamline access between the northern and southern entrances of Baghdad, effectively bypassing intersections.

Comprehensive Traffic Management Strategy

He emphasized that these projects will significantly enhance traffic flow, particularly with the openings of the army channel, Aden, and Sana’a routes. Citizens can expect a marked improvement in traffic conditions once both packages are fully operational, as they will function cohesively within a unified transport system. Additionally, the Al-Hilqi Road Project’s first phase is underway, which promises to transform traffic movement with accompanying street expansions and infrastructure upgrades.
