Iraq’s Electricity Future Brightens: Gulf Link Project Set for Completion by Year-End 2025

Last update:

Project Completion and Economic Implications of Iraq’s Energy Link with Gulf States

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity’s advisor, Abdel Hamza Hadi, announced on Thursday that the project aimed at connecting Iraq with Gulf states is set for completion by the end of 2025. This development will enable Iraq to engage with the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) electronic platform designated for energy transactions.

In recent statements, Hadi outlined that the Gulf Cooperation Council operates under a unified agreement collectively known as the Gulf Rabat Authority. This initiative includes a joint electrical line that stretches from the Sultanate of Oman to the State of Kuwait. To integrate into this network, Iraq plans to extend a line from the Al-Wafra station in Kuwait to the Al-Faw station in Basra. The anticipated completion of this project is set for the end of 2025.

Hadi emphasized a key advantage of this initiative: the existence of an electronic platform within the Gulf Cooperation Union designed for the sale of electricity. This platform will allow for the purchase of electrical energy based on real-time supply and demand dynamics, with prices fluctuating according to seasonal variations—particularly between summer and winter. Iraq is entitled to access this platform and make energy purchases based on its requirements for periods of six months or more.

This strategic connection with the Gulf states not only aids in enhancing Iraq’s energy security but also positions Iraq as an active participant in the regional energy market, promising potential economic benefits.
