New Souk Al-Shuyukh Hospital to Serve 150,000 in Dhi Qar

Economy News – Baghdad

The Governor of Dhi Qar, Mortada Al-Ibrahimi, announced on Thursday the construction of the Souq Al-Shuyukh Hospital, which is expected to serve an estimated 150,000 individuals in the southern regions of the province.

In a statement, Al-Ibrahimi conveyed that the project, launched under the guidance of Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani and overseen by Minister of Health Saleh Al-Hasnawi, involves the establishment of a 100-bed hospital designed to meet the healthcare needs of the local population.

He noted that the original hospital, established in the 1960s, is in dire need of modernization. With the Prime Minister’s continued support, the groundwork for this critical healthcare facility has been laid, aimed at providing essential medical services to the community.

Hussein Al-Batat, a member of the House of Representatives, indicated that the construction of the hospital is a component of the Ministry of Health’s 2024 plan, funded through the Iraqi-Chinese agreement. He highlighted the project’s importance, stating that it will encompass comprehensive construction, furnishing, and equipment phases, with a completion timeline not exceeding three years.

Additionally, Rashid Najm Al-Khaldi, the Director General of Dhi Qar, emphasized the significance of this project in transforming the health landscape of the province. The new hospital will introduce a substantial increase in healthcare capacity, addressing the needs of the 150,000 residents in the judiciary and surrounding districts.

Al-Khaldi further elaborated that the development of the Souq Al-Shuyukh Hospital is just one facet of a broader health sector enhancement initiative in Dhi Qar, which includes over 50 ongoing health projects, among them 10 additional hospitals with diverse clinical capacities. He expressed confidence that the successful completion of these projects will lead to a substantial improvement in the province’s healthcare system.

On Thursday morning, Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani officially launched the executive works for five hospitals across various governorates, part of a larger initiative to construct 16 hospitals, each with a capacity of 100 beds, including the Souq Al-Shuyukh Hospital in Dhi Qar.
