On Thursday, the Ministry of Electricity officially announced the initiation of the “Shams of Basra” project, marking Iraq’s largest solar energy initiative.
According to a ministry statement, this significant venture is being launched in partnership with Total Energy. The commencement of the “Shams Basra” project aligns with the objectives set forth by Minister of Electricity Ziad Ali Fadel to diversify the country’s energy resources.
The project will involve extensive civil works carried out by the French firm Total Energy to establish a solar-powered electricity station in the Basra Governorate. Spanning an area of 9,000 dunums in the Basra desert, the plant will be equipped with approximately two million solar panels, divided into four generator units, each generating 250 megawatts. The overall output of the station will be 1,000 megawatts of clean electricity.
The Ministry of Electricity is overseeing the execution of this project, which signifies a pivotal advancement towards reducing Iraq’s reliance on imported fuel and bolstering the nation’s energy security.
