Iran’s Parliament Urges 15B m³ Water Cut to Tackle Drought

Economic Analysis – Updates

A member of the Agriculture Committee in the Iranian Parliament has indicated that the agricultural sector consumes approximately 80 billion cubic meters of water annually. He emphasized the critical need to reduce this consumption to 65 billion cubic meters.

In a recent statement, Hamid Yazden highlighted the severity of the ongoing water shortage crisis. He noted that discussions on this issue are a regular part of the Agriculture Committee’s agenda, with current conversations also including the extension of water insurance to encompass drinking water. In light of these challenges, it is imperative to enhance efficiency in water usage to safeguard the food security of the populace.

Yazden further elaborated that the seventh development plan has reiterated the importance of this issue. He stated that the agricultural sector’s current water consumption level of 80 billion cubic meters must be reduced to 65 billion cubic meters.

He explained that while it is generally understood that the majority of water usage is directed toward agriculture, this assertion holds true primarily in years of average rainfall. In contrast, during drought conditions, such as this year, water consumption varies across different provinces, with some regions prioritizing water for drinking and industrial uses. Therefore, improving water efficiency is not limited to agriculture; it also requires addressing leaks in the drinking water distribution network. Moreover, the seventh development plan encourages industries to utilize treated water rather than relying on fresh supplies.

Yazden, who represents Isfahan, indicated that the seventh development plan involves adhering to the agricultural model designed by the Ministry of Agricultural Jihad. This model specifies suitable crops for each region, potentially leading to shifts in cultivation practices. These adjustments are encompassed within the agricultural policy framework; however, the lack of serious implementation in previous years is a concern that Parliament aims to address.

He further emphasized that the declining rainfall has exacerbated the drinking water crisis in many provinces, necessitating immediate action to reduce consumption across all sectors, including households, industries, and agriculture.

A member of the Agriculture Committee also called on administrators to prepare contingency plans to ensure drinking water availability in major cities such as Tehran, Isfahan, and Qom. This proactive approach is essential to prevent unexpected shortages during peak summer months. Unfortunately, the issue of water scarcity continues to be inadequately addressed.
