This week, approximately 4,000 employees from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), also known as the Pentagon, were notified of their impending layoffs as the administration of President Donald Trump moves forward with efforts to streamline the federal workforce.

According to an email sent by the employee management office, around 31,000 civilian employees—which constitutes about 3.5% of the total civilian workforce within the DoD—have submitted requests for resignation. However, it has been indicated that some requests may not be approved due to exemptions afforded to certain employees. To date, resignation requests from 11,000 individuals have been accepted.

In addition, the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), which serves as the logistical and supply chain management arm of the DoD, has initiated the demobilization of 100 employees as part of these workforce adjustments.

This layoff process marks the beginning of a series of job cuts within the Department of Defense, which commenced two weeks ago, focusing on project-based employees across various agencies.

Last month, President Trump highlighted a significant concern within the DoD, disclosing expectations of uncovering substantial financial misconduct during an audit led by an appointed overseer aimed at enhancing governmental efficiency. President Trump stated, “We will find fraud, violations amounting to billions and hundreds of millions of dollars,” regarding the Pentagon’s operations, the largest department within the U.S. government.

The Pentagon’s budget hovers near one trillion dollars per annum. In December, prior to President Joe Biden’s tenure, a legislation was enacted authorizing a defense expenditure budget of $895 billion for the fiscal year concluding on September 30.
