Former US President Donald Trump has expressed his belief that Elon Musk will uncover significant instances of fraud and violations within the Department of Defense during an audit he will oversee as part of the Ministry of Governmental Efficiency.
Trump stated, “I will inform him very soon, perhaps within 24 hours, to examine how things are operating within the Department of Education… and then we will turn our focus to the military. Let’s investigate the affairs of the military,” in a recent interview.
He commented, “We will uncover fraud and violations amounting to billions and hundreds of millions of dollars,” specifically referencing the Pentagon, which holds the status of the largest American agency.
Currently, the Pentagon’s budget is nearing $1 trillion annually. In December, the administration signed legislation approving $895 billion for defense for the fiscal year concluding on September 30.
Trump has tasked Musk, who frames the White House as a private sector employer, with initiatives aimed at reducing the federal government workforce. As part of this endeavor, Musk’s team has sought access to sensitive information across various governmental computer systems.
Critics have raised concerns that these efforts could be illegal, jeopardizing confidential data and likely dismantling entire agencies without congressional approval.
In a different interview, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz noted that the Ministry of Governmental Efficiency might focus closely on shipbuilding operations within the Pentagon. “There is a lot to be taken into account in ship construction, which is a complete mess,” he commented.
