Economic Update: Negotiations on Ukraine
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the initiation of negotiations aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
This exchange marks the first formally disclosed direct contact between an American president and Putin since February 2022, nearly three years ago.
In a statement shared on his social platform, “Truth Social,” Trump remarked, “We also agreed that our concerned teams will start negotiations immediately and we will begin communicating with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding this conversation, which I intend to do promptly.”
Trump further elaborated, “I addressed various issues with Putin, including those related to Ukraine, the Middle East, energy dynamics, artificial intelligence, and the U.S. dollar.”
The Kremlin also confirmed the call, noting that the conversation lasted approximately an hour and a half.
Previous reports have indicated that the U.S. strategy regarding the war in Ukraine aims to suspend hostilities without formally recognizing Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territory. Additionally, any potential NATO membership for Ukraine may be deferred, although Kyiv is expected to receive stringent security guarantees, coupled with substantial sanctions against Moscow in the event of non-compliance with any agreement.
