Economic Developments – Baghdad

On Sunday, the Ministry of Transport announced an ambitious set of development projects aimed at enhancing the infrastructure at Iraqi airports, with a significant focus on Baghdad International Airport, which will see 26 projects implemented as part of this initiative.

The Ministry confirmed in an official statement that “Baghdad International Airport is moving forward with a comprehensive development plan that aligns with the investment portfolio established by the International Finance Corporation.” This plan comprises two phases featuring a total of 26 projects.
The first phase focuses on infrastructure rehabilitation, encompassing 16 projects—nine of which are funded through the operational budget while seven are sourced from the investment budget.
The second phase includes ten projects, funded entirely by the investment budget. Additional projects are currently under review, including the redesign of Iraqi airspace, an alternative air navigation facility, and an upgraded air traffic management system.

Furthermore, the statement highlighted that the airport administration has already commenced infrastructure rehabilitation activities. These include projects aimed at expanding green spaces and gardens, with contracts signed and work underway, as well as the refurbishment of ceilings and floors in the Babylon and Samarra halls, which are now 22% complete.

Regarding air examination efforts, the statement noted that navigation devices are installed along the runway. A report from New Zealand Radiola confirmed the reliability of all landing devices, ensuring progress in implementing the development plans for Iraq’s aviation sector.

Moreover, the General Airport and Air Navigation Management Company has successfully expanded civil aviation airspace by integrating previously restricted military areas, enabling a flow of 600 to 650 transit aircraft per day.

The statement also mentioned the integration of the Ils system as part of the automated landing project, alongside existing systems established at the airport since 2005-2006. Contracts for rehabilitation projects involving lighting and decoration have been initiated as well, reinforcing the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing airport facilities. Revenue from the General Company for Airport and Air Navigation Management has seen substantial growth, increasing from 4 billion dinars to 15 billion dinars monthly.

Additionally, the Nasiriyah Airport project is progressing well, with navigation devices arriving from globally recognized suppliers such as Endra, a company specializing in aviation technology. Meanwhile, Mosul Airport has achieved 82% completion in the installation of its navigation devices, primarily sourced from top French international firms, with an opening scheduled before the year’s end.

Regarding Basra International Airport, the Ministry has expressed intentions to collaborate with international companies to procure two radar systems—one for the western region of Iraq and the other for Basra Airport.
