Minister of Water Resources: Recent Rains Boost Water Storage by 300 Million Cubic Meters
In a recent announcement, Aoun Dhiab, the Minister of Water Resources, confirmed that the recent rains have significantly enhanced Iraq’s water storage capacity, adding approximately 300 million cubic meters.
According to Minister Dhiab, the rainfall received over the past days has had a substantial positive impact on irrigation across the country, stating that farmers will be able to irrigate their crops without the need for additional water resources. This rainfall is deemed highly valuable in both qualitative and quantitative aspects.
The Minister highlighted that, in response to the increased precipitation, the Ministry of Water Resources has adjusted water releases. Specifically, the flow of water is being moderated from north to south to optimize storage levels in dams and reservoirs. As a result of the recent rainfall, the country has seen a considerable allocation of water resources, with 100 million cubic meters collected in dams, 100 million cubic meters in Lake Al-Tharthar, and an additional 100 million cubic meters flowing into marsh areas.
Dhiab expressed optimism for continued rainfall in the near future, noting forecasts for additional rain in April. The Ministry is actively working to enhance water storage capabilities to meet the demands expected during the upcoming summer months.
This proactive approach to water resource management underscores the importance of natural rainfall in bolstering Iraq’s agricultural and water supply needs amid ongoing climatic challenges.
