In a recent statement, MP Muhammad Al-Shammari placed the primary blame for the worsening financial predicament in Iraq on the Kurdistan Region. He highlighted that the region is currently exporting 400,000 barrels of oil daily to Afghanistan without remitting the proceeds to the federal government. This situation remains concerning, particularly as these quantities factor into Iraq’s allocations from OPEC.
Al-Shammari elaborated on how these actions are detrimentally impacting Iraq’s financial revenues, thereby intensifying the economic challenges faced by the federal government. He pointed out that the lack of effective oversight on these exports constitutes a breach of the financial agreements established between Baghdad and Erbil.
Addressing the pressing need for intervention, Al-Shammari urged the federal government to implement stringent measures to ensure that oil revenues are directed to the state treasury. He cautioned that the persistence of this approach could further aggravate the economic crisis and undermine the government’s financial capacity to fulfill its commitments to citizens.
