Kurdistan Achieves Chicken & Egg Self-Sufficiency, Eyes Red Meat Expansion

Ministry of Agriculture of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Kurdistan Region (KRG) has announced a significant milestone in its agricultural sector: the region has achieved self-sufficiency in the production of chicken and eggs. The Ministry is also focused on enhancing domestic supplies and developing dairy projects to produce red meat.

KRG spokesman Hiwa Ali revealed that there are currently 2,442 projects in the livestock sector, covering areas such as egg production, poultry, and livestock management.

According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, the region’s chicken and egg production will meet domestic demand and serve a substantial portion of the Iraqi market for chicken meat.

However, some farmers and factories are facing challenges in marketing their products. “We are actively working on creating suitable market conditions and addressing the marketing issues at the domestic level,” he noted. Furthermore, “important steps have been taken to facilitate the export of our livestock products to developed countries in the near future.”
