Monthly Gold Imports in Iraq: 1.5 Tons Reported by the Ministry of Planning
The Iraqi Ministry of Planning has announced that approximately 1.5 tons of gold are imported into the country each month. This figure translates to a daily import rate of about 50 kilograms, as stated by Abdul Zahra Hindawi, spokesman for the Ministry.
According to existing regulations, gold imports in Iraq are exclusively permitted through airport channels. The government prohibits land-based gold imports, restricting transactions to the four airports located in Baghdad, Najaf, Basra, and Kirkuk. Notably, Erbil and Sulaimani airports are not included in the current import scheme.
A significant development occurred on December 23, 2025, with the inauguration of the Gold and Chops Creation Center at Kirkuk airport. Following this launch, the importation of gold via Kirkuk airport commenced approximately 40 days later.
“Traders can now import gold through the airport,” stated Hardi Samad, the director of media and communications at Kirkuk airport, emphasizing the new opportunities this regulation has created.
