Iraq’s Plan to Mitigate 8,000 MW Loss from Iranian Gas Cut

On Monday, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity outlined its strategic preparations for the upcoming summer season and addressed the challenge of compensating for the reduction in Iranian gas imports, following the recent decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to revoke the exemption allowing Iraq to import gas from Iran.

Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Al-Abadi stated that the reduction in gas supplies from Iran is anticipated to have a profound impact on Iraq’s electricity sector, translating to a loss of over 8,000 megawatts of capacity. However, the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Electricity have formulated a comprehensive strategy aimed at preventing an equipment crisis during the peak summer months.

Al-Abadi elaborated on the details of the plan, which includes removing existing bottlenecks, establishing new energy sources, and constructing a variety of power stations. A significant element of this initiative involves transitioning government facilities to solar energy systems. The initial phase of this implementation will enhance more than 540 government buildings, with one-third of the upgrades expected to be completed prior to the onset of summer.
