Voluntary Return of Iraqi Citizens from Libya: An Update from the Foreign Ministry
In a recent announcement, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed the successful repatriation of Iraqi nationals from Libya, emphasizing its ongoing commitment to this matter in collaboration with relevant authorities. According to the ministry’s statement, the Iraqi embassy in Libya has been actively managing the voluntary return of citizens, having facilitated the return of 39 individuals to date. Of these, 25 were repatriated in 2024, while 12 returned last week in early 2025. These individuals had initially entered Libya with the intention of pursuing illegal migration routes to Europe.
Additionally, the embassy reported the completion of deportation procedures for two more citizens who were also attempting to migrate illegally through Libya. The ministry highlighted the embassy’s efforts to coordinate with Libyan security authorities, aiming to protect migrants from the risks associated with human trafficking networks. In support of these individuals, the embassy has provided services including accommodation, food, and medical care, reflecting its adherence to the principle of voluntary return.
Moreover, high-level coordination efforts were noted between the embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad, alongside the Foreign Relations Committee in the Iraqi Council of Representatives. These collaborative efforts were crucial in ensuring a smooth return process, including securing travel tickets for the repatriated citizens.
This proactive approach underscores Iraq’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad and addressing the challenges posed by illegal migration pathways.
