Baghdad’s Electricity Ministry Unveils Plans for Energy Boost

Economy News – Baghdad

The Ministry of Electricity has unveiled strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing energy production. In its announcement, the Ministry outlined various effective measures designed to boost revenue collection and mitigate losses, emphasizing how these steps have positively impacted collection metrics alongside increased operational hours.

“The Ministry has prioritized the development of strategic projects that have long been necessary, such as the establishment of steam power plants and complex systems that operate without gas or fuel, relying instead on local energy sources. Additionally, efforts are underway to increase energy transfer capacities through electrical interconnections with neighboring countries, and the Ministry is pursuing the completion of the electrical connection to the Gulf states. Furthermore, the adoption of renewable energy sources, solar power, and waste-to-energy initiatives are integral to our strategy,” the Ministry stated.

Moreover, the Ministry has been engaged in defining energy districts to maximize collection resources and regulate load management. Comprehensive plans and programs have been implemented, setting clear objectives for distribution companies to enhance their efficiency, increase consumption resources, and minimize losses. There is an expectation for monthly improvements in collection figures compared to preceding months.

Additionally, the directives include the auditing and documentation of central governmental institutions and self-funded entities, alongside the installation of meters to facilitate revenue collection. There is a focus on implementing industrial, commercial, and agricultural meters tailored to non-residential energy users based on their operational activity. The Ministry is also exploring smart transformation projects that incorporate intelligent metering systems to enhance load control, improve service delivery, and ensure accurate revenue metrics, all aiming to eliminate unaccounted energy provision.

On further outlining the initiatives, the Ministry addressed the organization of distribution networks within irregular and agricultural sectors, implementing meters to record energy consumption and treating these areas as conventional consumers. The objectives include precise calculations of distributed energy values, with meter installations on 33 kV and 11 kV distribution lines. Each distribution sector and associated collection divisions are required to meet accountability standards based on these measures, ensuring that funds from collections are properly deposited rather than remaining in collection centers.

Finally, the Ministry noted, “Indicators suggest a positive trend in collection as a direct outcome of these enforced measures, with improvements already visible compared to previous years. However, collection efficiency is still tied to electricity availability, and challenges such as fuel scarcity may influence production capabilities and, subsequently, collection performance.”
