Economy News – Baghdad
In a recent announcement, the Municipality of Baghdad has urged rug vendors to strictly adhere to designated selling areas and refrain from transforming these spaces into permanent retail outlets, kiosks, or shops. The municipality emphasized its commitment to regulate the vendors’ presence without resorting to removals.
Muhammad Al-Rubaie, the Director of Relations and Media at the Baghdad Municipality, stated that the Secretariat will establish organized vendor locations on sidewalks based on defined criteria. Al-Rubaie specified that rugs will only be permitted within allotted dimensions—no greater than two meters in width and one and a half meters in length.
He cautioned vendors against extending into street areas or converting their setups into fixed structures such as shops, kiosks, or vehicles. Such actions are deemed detrimental to the aesthetic appeal of the streets and surrounding commercial establishments.
Additionally, Al-Rubaie indicated that the municipality is collaborating with the designs department to maintain the city’s overall visual identity and is exploring the possibility of establishing alternative selling sites on certain streets. If viable alternatives are not feasible, the municipal authorities will engage the private sector to identify suitable solutions.
Al-Rubaie underscored the importance of cooperation from vendors in adhering to the assigned areas. He expressed concern over individuals repurposing selling stalls for multiple uses, such as multi-storey commercial establishments or smoking areas, which compromise the overall appearance, particularly in notable districts like Al-Kadhimiya markets, Baghdad New, and Al-Rubaie Street.
