USAID Suspends Global Programs, Grants Employees Administrative Leave Amid Major Restructuring

Economy News – Baghdad

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced plans to place the majority of its global workforce on administrative leave, effective from 11:59 pm on Friday.

This strategic move results in the temporary suspension of numerous agency programs, as USAID spearheads US foreign aid initiatives.

In an email communication to employees, the agency indicated that most supervisory staff members are expected to return to the United States within days.

However, exceptions will be made for “employees responsible for critical tasks in missions, key leadership roles, and certain specified programs.” Key personnel are anticipated to fulfill their responsibilities as usual.

The communication further noted that many contractors engaged with the agency will see their contracts terminated. USAID has stated it is evaluating “exceptions for each case individually,” which may include extending the travel or return period due to personal or family emergencies, safety concerns, or other pertinent reasons.

The agency is collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to formulate a plan that will facilitate the logistics and funding necessary for the repatriation of employees stationed abroad, with an aim to complete this within 30 days.

This announcement follows remarks by Elon Musk regarding President Donald Trump’s agreement to close USAID. Additionally, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed on Monday intentions for new leadership and a potential restructuring of the agency.
