US Flights at Risk of Delays as Key Pilot Notification System Faces Temporary Hiccup

Economy Update – Follow-up

On Saturday evening, US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy announced that a critical communication system for pilots in the United States experienced a temporary outage, potentially leading to flight delays on Sunday.

Duffy indicated via the “X” platform that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively working to restore the air task notification system, known as Nuteam.

He elaborated that there is currently no impact on the national airspace system due to the operation of a reserve system. The FAA has established a hotline to facilitate communication with aviation authorities, committing to provide updates regarding the system’s status every 30 minutes.

Duffy advised travelers to check with their airlines for the status of flights scheduled for Sunday, warning that some delays may occur, particularly in the morning.

This incident recalls a significant disruption in January 2023, where a failure in the air task notification system led to the first nationwide halt of flights in the U.S. since 2001, affecting over 11,000 flights.

The Nuteam system serves important safety functions for the aviation sector, including notifications about aircraft passage lights at airports, the presence of paratroopers in adjacent areas, and runway closures due to construction work.
