On Friday, the United States announced its decision to cease funding for the United Nations World Food Program.
Reports indicate that this decision is part of a broader reevaluation of U.S. involvement in international aid. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has previously provided financial support amounting to millions of dollars for food assistance in countries including Yemen, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Haiti, and Mali.
Under the current administration, significant changes are underway at USAID, with approximately 60 senior officials reportedly receiving their notices. Additionally, the administration has voiced intentions to restructure the agency, echoing earlier statements from businessman Elon Musk regarding potential complete closure of its operations.
The administration, led by former President Trump, has criticized international aid efforts, alleging inefficiencies and waste of taxpayer funds. In line with this, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio has reiterated that future foreign assistance will be aligned more closely with U.S. national interests.
