Sudani Unveils Price Cuts for Social Protection Recipients

Prime Minister Al-Sudani Initiates Price Reductions for Social Protection Beneficiaries

On February 26, 2025, Prime Minister Muhammad Shi’a Al-Sudani announced a strategic initiative aimed at reducing prices for beneficiaries of the social protection program receiving monetary subsidies.

In a recent directive, the Prime Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to combating poverty and assisting vulnerable populations. He instructed the ministries of trade, labor, and social affairs to implement a price reduction service specifically for individuals on social protection. This initiative will take effect from the first day of Ramadan, with reductions ranging between 10% to 15% on prescribed prices. The price cuts will apply to all items sold at the government-operated cooperation centers (hypermarkets), of which six have recently been opened in Baghdad. Additionally, the Prime Minister has kick-started operations for 23 similar centers in Baghdad and across various provinces.

The government’s objective is to ultimately expand this network to a total of 150 centers specializing in food and essential goods, offered at subsidized rates. This measure is part of the government’s broader strategy to bolster food and commodity security for citizens, ensuring that essential provisions remain accessible to the population during critical times.
