Prime Minister Al-Sudani Advocates for Technology in Border Management
Baghdad – On Monday, Prime Minister Mohamed Shi’a Al-Sudani emphasized the necessity of integrating technology, automation systems, and modern governance within the Border Ports Authority to streamline the importation of goods into Iraq.
In an official statement, it was reported that Prime Minister Al-Sudani met with Major General Omar Adnan Al-Waeli, head of the Border Ports Authority. Their discussion centered on the current state of border outlets and the imperative need for their development and reconstruction. Also on the agenda were the activation of electronic governance throughout procedural workflows and initiatives to combat corruption and smuggling—issues deemed critical by the government.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani highlighted the importance of maximizing non-oil revenues as a vital component in bolstering the state’s financial reserves. He emphasized that this goal necessitates a robust anti-corruption framework, meticulous oversight of financial transactions, and the formulation of well-researched plans aimed at preventing any forms of manipulation or exploitation. He called for enhanced coordination and collaboration among the various agencies operating at the border ports.
Furthermore, Al-Sudani advocated for the adoption of advanced technologies and automated systems to facilitate goods entry through border ports, urging the Border Ports Authority to evaluate its personnel rigorously and to remove any individuals with negative records linked to these operations.
In response, Major General Al-Waeli provided a summary of the recent qualitative initiatives undertaken by the authority, which included actions against the misappropriation of public funds, the falsification of tax documents, unauthorized vehicle smuggling, and the regulation of medicine and medical supply trafficking. He also summarized the overall efforts related to the rehabilitation and enhancement of border facilities.
The statement concluded with the head of the Border Ports Authority affirming that addressing border outlet issues is a priority for the government’s success. The authority is committed to strategic objectives such as revenue maximization, infrastructure development, implementation of electronic governance, reinforcing the state’s authority, safeguarding local products, and curbing manipulation and smuggling activities. Al-Waeli asserted that the authority would act as a formidable barrier against any attempts to compromise the nation’s economic integrity.
