An American court has mandated that Starbucks compensate a delivery driver to the tune of $50 million following an incident involving severe burns caused by a poorly secured cover on a hot beverage. A company spokesperson expressed, “We empathize with Mr. Garcia, but we contest the jury’s decision regarding liability for this incident, believing the awarded compensation is excessively high.” The spokesperson also reaffirmed Starbucks’ commitment to maintaining stringent safety standards in all its locations, particularly concerning hot beverages.
This ruling draws parallels with a prominent case from 1994, wherein a woman was awarded nearly $3 million after suffering third-degree burns from hot coffee spilled by McDonald’s. Such cases continue to shape public perceptions and legal standards regarding food service safety.
