Saudi Arabia Ranks as Major Holder of US Bonds for 2024
The US Treasury has officially announced that Saudi Arabia stands out as the sole Arab nation among the top foreign holders of US bonds for the year 2024.
In its latest report for 2025, the Treasury revealed that Saudi Arabia ranks 17th among the world’s largest holders of US bonds, with an impressive portfolio valued at approximately $137.5 billion.
Global Rankings of US Bond Holders
Leading the list of countries, Japan holds the top position with a significant investment of $1.059 trillion in US bonds. Following Japan, China ranks second with holdings of $759 billion, while the United Kingdom and Luxembourg secure the third and fourth spots with investments of $722 billion and $424 billion, respectively. The Cayman Islands and Canada round out the top six, holding $419 billion and $379 billion in US bonds.
Iraq’s Position
Notably, Iraq does not appear among the top 20 bond holders this year, despite holding $32.6 billion in US bonds in 2023.
Total Global Bond Holdings
The Treasury’s report indicates that the total value of US bonds held by countries worldwide reached approximately $8.513 trillion over the past year, reflecting the substantial scale of international investment in US securities.
This information underscores the critical role of these countries in the global financial markets and highlights Saudi Arabia’s significant presence in US bond investments for 2024.
