The local government in Salah al-Din Governorate has announced the initiation of 25 projects that align with contemporary environmental standards aimed at reducing pollution. This decision reflects the growing need for sustainable practices in the region.
During a recent meeting, local officials engaged with members of the relevant committee to discuss the integration of technical and engineering specifications for renewable and clean energy initiatives within the province.
“Iraq, like many parts of the world, faces significant environmental challenges stemming from pollution caused by the unregulated use of resources and outdated agricultural practices,” noted a spokesperson. “Numerous informal factories and industrial facilities do not adhere to necessary technical and environmental standards, which only intensifies the crisis.”
The local government has crafted strategic plans in partnership with the Ministry of Planning to ensure the incorporation of environmental regulations in upcoming projects. This comprehensive plan will utilize buffer materials to enhance energy efficiency.
A conference held in Erbil, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration, led to an agreement on the implementation of these 25 environmentally-focused projects. These include systems for reducing water and electricity consumption and the introduction of advanced lighting technologies. Additionally, a sophisticated surveillance system is set to be introduced in the province to help maintain environmental standards and improve overall quality of life.
The local government aims to deliver significant environmental improvements in the years to come.
Regarding financial support for citizens interested in solar energy, the spokesperson shared, “A government initiative is underway to offer loans to residents wishing to install solar energy systems, with solar panels being placed on rooftops and exterior walls.”
This initiative represents a pivotal move towards promoting renewable energy. However, it will require specialized media outreach and educational programs to inform citizens about the benefits of this technology and its critical role in safeguarding Iraq’s environment.
