The Border Ports Authority is implementing a smart system designed to monitor truck weights at the Trebil border crossing, with plans for a broader rollout across all ports.
According to Ahmed Ezz El-Din, the consultant for the network linkage project at the border ports, the smart national system for tracking truck weights aims to oversee their movement on roads leading to border outlets as well as the entrances and exits of urban areas. This system will establish control points equipped with electronic scales capable of measuring truck weight and axle counts without requiring vehicles to stop.
The system utilizes cameras to read truck numbers, assess their length, and identify their specifications via a laser scanner. In cases where trucks transport shipping containers, the system can also read container numbers. Additionally, it reads adhesive labels for the border ports management system; collectively, these readings allow for the identification of trucks and determination of compliance with regulations.
Ezz El-Din indicated that this mechanism enables tracking of truck movements through operation centers connected to the system, ensuring integration with regulations governing urban entry and exit. This technology is expected to generate accurate and reliable data on truck weights, axle counts, dimensions, and types, thereby enhancing control over truck movements at border ports.
Moreover, Ezz El-Din noted that the system aids in detecting any attempts to manipulate weight measurements or evade regulatory restrictions at ports. It streamlines inspection procedures, reduces reliance on manual checks, and leverages digital data generated by the system. This advancement enhances truck flow efficiency through ports, mitigates congestion, and lessens waiting times.
