Revamping Iraq’s Energy: Innovative Gas Projects Unveiled

Baghdad – Key Developments in Iraq’s Energy Sector

Strategic Gas Projects Underway

Hayyan Abdel-Ghani Al-Sawad, the Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, reiterated on Friday, March 7, 2025, the ongoing execution of pivotal strategic initiatives designed to enhance gas utilization across various sectors. These projects aim to supply electrical power stations while curbing gas flaring, thereby contributing to environmental improvement.

In his statement, Al-Sawad confirmed that a contract has been finalized with Total, the gas investment company, covering five distinct fields. He emphasized that work is progressing rapidly towards project completion within the established timelines.

Response to Increasing Gas Demand

The rising domestic demand for gas has prompted the Iraqi government to embark on two significant infrastructure projects. The first initiative involves the construction of a fixed platform at the FAO for gas imports, with Iraqi ports designated to host this facility. The second initiative will see the Ministry of Oil erect a floating platform at the Khor Al-Zubair port, aimed at facilitating gas imports from neighboring countries including Qatar. This project will involve extending necessary pipelines to transport gas to main power stations.

New Gas Production Initiative

On January 10, 2025, the Minister of Oil commenced the gas production project in the Artawi field, which is expected to yield a capacity of 50 million cubic feet per day. This project, in collaboration with French company Total, is scheduled for completion next year and is anticipated to bolster fuel supply for power generation stations.

Commitment to Energy Development

The government remains steadfast in its efforts to develop the gas sector, ensuring the fulfillment of energy requirements while enhancing the environmental landscape within the country.
