US Republican Lawmaker Critiques Biden Administration’s Policies Toward Iraq and Iran
Joe Wilson, a deputy in the American Republican Party, expressed renewed criticism on Wednesday of the previous administration led by Joe Biden regarding its policies towards Iraq and Iran over recent years. In a post shared on the X platform, Wilson highlighted that Iraq has been transferring approximately $10 billion annually to Iran, primarily for oil and electricity purchases, facilitated by a U.S. exemption.
Despite these transactions, Iraq has also sought energy resources from neighboring Arab countries. Notably, in August 2023, Iraq signed an initial agreement with Turkmenistan to import natural gas to fulfill part of its electricity generation requirements. However, the situation shifted dramatically by late November 2024 when the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity reported a complete cessation of Iranian resource supplies, which resulted in a significant loss of 5,500 megawatts in the national electricity system.
Furthermore, it was noted that the Sudanese government covered the expenses without considering the duration of service interruptions or reductions in supplied gas quantities.
