Economic Update: Qatar to Supply Gas to Syria
According to reliable sources, Qatar is set to commence natural gas shipments to Syria to alleviate the country’s ongoing energy crisis. This gas supply will be transported through pipelines that traverse Jordan.
The protracted civil war in Syria, spanning over a decade, has severely compromised the nation’s electricity infrastructure. Once a self-sufficient oil-exporting state, Syria has had to resort to energy imports, particularly from Iran, to meet its domestic needs. However, the cessation of Iranian oil deliveries in the wake of the regime change at the end of last year has exacerbated the situation.
Most of Syria’s productive oil fields are concentrated in the northeastern regions, currently under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces, predominantly led by Kurdish groups.
Impact on the Electricity Sector
The cumulative losses incurred by Syria’s electricity sector during the thirteen years of conflict are estimated to be around $40 billion, with indirect losses exceeding $80 billion, as reported by former Electricity Minister Ghassan Al-Zamil. The destruction of electrical infrastructure and transmission lines has impeded over 50% of the nation’s electricity grid, which has a daily requirement of 23 million cubic meters of gas, yet currently only receives 6.5 million cubic meters.
