Prime Minister Sudanese Leads Key Meeting on Boosting Iraq’s Sulfur and Phosphate Production

On Thursday, January 29, 2025, Prime Minister Mohamed Shayaa convened a crucial meeting focused on enhancing sulfur and phosphate production.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the meeting included notable officials: the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Oil, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Industry and Minerals, the Governor of the Central Bank, along with various advisors and general managers. This gathering aimed to discuss strategic pathways for advancing the country’s mineral wealth industries, which play a vital role in supporting various sectors. The Minister of Oil, Industry, and Minerals highlighted Iraq’s existing reserves of sulfur and phosphate.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of optimizing the investment of these resources, seen as critical to the nation’s economic security. He noted that the potential of these assets has remained underutilized for decades. The objective of the meeting was to consolidate perspectives and ideas to enhance state revenues significantly.

Furthermore, he reiterated that the government is committed to diversifying revenue streams and implementing strategic initiatives that augment development across different fields and sectors.

During the session, it was decided to establish a committee chaired by the Prime Minister for Energy Affairs. This committee will include technical representatives from the ministries of oil, industry and minerals, as well as legal advisors from the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, accompanied by two general managers from the respective ministries. This committee is tasked with submitting a comprehensive report within one month concerning the vision for optimal investment in sulfur and phosphate mining.
