Power Outage Halts 35 Oil Wells in Southern Iraq

Power Outages Impact Oil Production in Southern Iraq

On Thursday, a reliable source reported that over 30 oil wells in Basra and the surrounding southern governorates have ceased operations due to widespread power outages. The source indicated that the number of affected wells totals 35, collectively contributing to a production loss of approximately 57,000 barrels of oil per day.

These wells are dependent on submersible pumps, but efforts are underway to compensate for the disrupted electricity supply with the activation of backup generators.

The power outages in the southern regions have been attributed to a complete shutdown of electricity services, which began early Thursday morning. This disruption was caused by an increase in power generation that resulted in a fault in the Maysan 400-West transmission line.

The current situation underscores the critical need for robust infrastructure capable of maintaining energy supplies to sustain oil production levels, which are vital to the economy.
