Over 5,500 Syrian Workers in Iraq: Sneaky Entry Tactics Exposed

Economy Overview – Baghdad

In recent developments, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has reported on the arrival of Syrian workers in Iraq.

Ministry spokesman Hassan Khawam stated that “the number of foreign workers from Syria registered with the ministry has reached 5,544.” He emphasized that this figure is officially documented.

Regarding instances of unauthorized entry, Khawam explained that “Syrian workers typically enter Iraq under the guise of tourist visits, medical treatment, or religious pilgrimages. Subsequently, they often disperse to various locations for employment.”

He further noted, “The ministry has established committees dedicated to inspecting workplaces. Any worker discovered to be violating laws is promptly deported in accordance with labor regulations governing employment in Iraq.”

Addressing the roles occupied by these Syrian workers, the spokesman remarked, “Syrian laborers are predominantly employed in the tourism sector, particularly in hotels and restaurants. We are actively working to streamline this process.”

However, Syrian workers in Iraq now face significant challenges, particularly due to recent escalations in tensions on the Syrian coast, leading to some groups targeting them due to their perceived support for the current administration in Damascus.
