Contract Signed for Development of Kirkuk Oil Fields
On March 10, 2025, the Ministry of Oil finalized a significant contract with British Petroleum (BP) to initiate the development of four key oil fields in Kirkuk. This agreement represents a pivotal step in enhancing Iraq’s oil production capabilities and maximizing state resources.
Enhancing National Production
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Oil, Hayyan Abdel-Ghani Al-Sawad, affirmed the significance of the contract, stating that the development will encompass the Kirkuk fields, specifically Avana, Baba, Bay Hassan, Baks, and Jambour. Al-Sawad emphasized the ministry’s commitment to bolstering oil and gas resources, which is expected to positively impact federal budgetary revenues.
The minister highlighted the achievement as vital for the ministry and BP, particularly following a previous pause in operations. He noted that the development and rehabilitation activities will not only increase national oil production but also enhance gas investments, contributing to the generation of electric energy.
Collaboration and Infrastructure Development
Al-Sawad expressed appreciation for all stakeholders involved in reaching this milestone. The contract entails not only the rehabilitation and enhancement of the four oil fields but also the expansion of gas facilities within the Northern Gas Company. This comprehensive approach aims to strengthen Iraq’s energy infrastructure and sustain its economic growth.
In summary, the collaboration between the Iraqi Ministry of Oil and BP marks a significant advancement in enhancing oil production in the Kirkuk region, aligning with broader economic objectives and sustainable development goals.
