Economy Update – Baghdad
On Thursday, Prime Minister Mohamed Shi’a Al-Sudani officially launched the Cupping Railway in Sawah, Muthanna, alongside three newly constructed concrete bridges as part of various regional development projects.
According to the Prime Minister’s office, these initiatives were revitalized under government efforts to address previous challenges that halted progress. The enhanced plans aim to ensure the successful completion of vital infrastructure in the governorate.
The Cupping Railway project encompasses the establishment of a double-track railway starting from the Cupping Train Station in Sawah and extending to the Samawah Train Station. The project includes features such as passenger shelters, integrated rail systems, and a dedicated passenger tunnel at the Cupping Train Station. The entire line has been designed for efficient operation, capable of supporting speeds of up to 120 km/h, spanning a total length of 24 kilometers between the Al-Hujama-Sawa and Sawah-Samawah segments. Additional developments include two new berths and integrated lines at the Sawah Train Station to streamline train operations.
Furthermore, the initiative incorporates the construction of three substantial concrete bridges over the Euphrates River and its branches, each comprising three traffic lanes. These bridges will intersect with modern railway lines to facilitate uninterrupted train movement. The project also calls for the installation of 43 diverse concrete bridges beneath the railway, aimed at irrigating agricultural lands while including designs for future services.
Designed by the German firm Dorc, the project aims to enhance the efficiency of passenger and freight transport, ultimately boosting revenues for the General Rackets Company and serving the populace of the Middle Euphrates region. The total investment for this infrastructure development stands at $107 million.
