Ministry of Electricity Unveils Ambitious Plans for Steam and Gas Stations to Boost Energy Production

Ministry of Electricity Advances Energy Production Initiatives

On Sunday, the Ministry of Electricity unveiled its strategy to enhance energy production through the implementation of steam and gas-powered stations. These significant projects are anticipated to bolster the energy grid with substantial capacity additions.

Ahmed Moussa, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity, emphasized that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Sudani is actively overseeing the electricity sector and its associated initiatives. This includes the ongoing execution of a comprehensive plan aimed at effectively managing peak load demands during the approaching summer months. The Prime Minister has empowered the ministry by allocating resources, making decisions, and providing substantial support, in addition to recently instructing the continuous operation of electricity over three shifts, thereby ensuring a 24-hour supply. This strategy is part of the preparations for upcoming summer demands, focusing on production, transmission, distribution, and resolution of existing bottlenecks, as well as the advancement of new smart transformation projects.

Moussa highlighted that the Prime Minister is also monitoring the financial structures of the Ministry of Electricity, which encompass contracts for project development—these can be structured either through investment opportunities granted to major international firms for the construction of production facilities, or via loans secured from international financing institutions to support these projects. Government projects are being implemented directly by the relevant sectoral authorities.

The Ministry has been evaluating a range of financial models for both steam and gas energy stations, as discussions continue among its advisory bodies to finalize a viable framework for awarding contracts for power production, which could amount to an impressive 35,000 megawatts.

The current generation capacity is insufficient to meet consumer demand, prompting the Ministry’s commitment to initiate significant energy production enhancements. Projects under consideration include the establishment of steam stations with a capacity of around 15,000 megawatts, alongside a new suite of gas stations developed in collaboration with leading global companies such as GE and Siemens. These initiatives are geared toward addressing the growing energy demand while ensuring alignment with governmental strategies and the Ministry of Oil’s objectives in optimizing and rehabilitating national gas fields.

The government and the Ministry of Oil are expediting efforts to maximize the utility of domestic natural gas, formulating plans and financial models for large-scale projects aiming to add an additional 15,000 megawatts, alongside a separate package contributing another 35,000 megawatts. This coordinated approach will align with ongoing government efforts to harness national gas prospects.

Moussa noted that these large-scale projects are essential for maintaining operational momentum within the energy system. This underscores the government’s strategic emphasis on infrastructure development and long-term projects aimed at creating a robust electricity system likely to be completed within four to five years. Such planning reflects a commitment to establishing an electricity framework that effectively serves citizens with reliability and efficiency.
