Mid-2025: Iraq’s Major Railway Rebuild and Development Plan

Economy Update – Baghdad

The Ministry of Transport has announced a completion target of mid-2025 for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of railway infrastructure and damaged stations, coinciding with the rollout of the first phase of the development road project.

Jabbar Alioui, Director General of the General Company for the Iraqi Make under the Ministry, stated that recent inspections of the railway infrastructure extending from southern regions to the city of Rabia in Nineveh Governorate revealed that the majority of the lines are in satisfactory condition and suitable for transportation for the initial stage of the development road project. However, sections destroyed by ISIS in the northern and western regions will require attention. The Ministry anticipates completing reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts for all affected lines and stations by mid-2025.

Alioui highlighted collaborative efforts with local governments to address damages, particularly focusing on the Baghdad-Al-Qaim-Ramadi-Wasba line, which involves the reconstruction of four critical bridges in Anbar Governorate that were previously destroyed.

Additionally, he noted that the linear routes from Mahmoudiyah to Al-Musayyib, as well as the connection to Sawah, have been fully completed. Plans are underway to finalize designs for the railway line connecting Al-Shuaiba to the dual large Al-Faw Port, alongside the establishment of new railways extending towards Diwaniyah and Shuhom, ensuring that all lines are functional throughout the route.

Reconstruction efforts will also encompass the creation of new lines reaching warehouses and major refineries, including those in the session, Baiji, Shuaiba, and Al-Qayer regions, as well as the Hilla and Diwaniyah oil depot. This initiative entails the rehabilitation of all warehouse lines and refineries along the development road corridor.

Furthermore, Alioui disclosed that a contract has been signed with a specialized foreign firm to construct a double railway line connecting Al-Musayyib Train Stations to the Holy Karbala and the Karbala oil refinery. This project will include building three new train stations, one located in IP, as well as the reconstruction of crucial bridges at road-rail intersections over rivers and adjacent to residential areas.
