Sulaymaniyah Retirement Salary Adjustment
On February 10, 2025, Sheikh Aziz, the director of military retirement in Sulaymaniyah, announced a significant impending amendment to the salary structure for retirees within the region. This reform aligns with Law No. (9) concerning retiree benefits in Kurdistan.
Aziz stated that under the new agreement, retirees will have their service years calculated, allowing them to receive 80% of their nominal salary, in addition to an end-of-service benefit and compensation for their academic qualifications.
He further elaborated that the agreement is finalized, resulting in an increase in the salaries of both civilian and military retirees. This adjustment will take effect retroactively from January 2025, pending the approval and disbursement of funds by the Federal Ministry of Finance, following the submission of relevant lists to Baghdad.
Meanwhile, the ongoing sit-in of dozens of protesters in Sulaymaniyah marked its 14th day, as of February 10, 2025. The demonstrators are advocating for the payment of overdue salaries and the localization of federal banking services.
According to sources, the sit-in participants have established a condition for the regional government to conclude the protest, which is taking place in front of the United Nations building. They have demanded the payment of salaries for the 12th month of the previous year as a prerequisite for the protest’s end. Once this condition is met, they intend to return educational staff to schools and facilitate the resettlement process exclusively through federal banks.
