Economy News – Baghdad
On Sunday, livestock breeders in Kokkigy, located in Nineveh Governorate, took the initiative to block the pivotal roadway between Mosul and Erbil, setting up sit-in tents to protest restrictions on the transfer of their livestock. These restrictions are a result of quarantine measures implemented in response to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
Protesters gathered in significant numbers at the site, halting traffic on the main road as security forces maintained a visible presence. The livestock breeders voiced their discontent with the ongoing limitations on the movement of their calves, while other commercial vehicles were observed moving without hindrance.
In a related event the previous evening, hundreds of livestock keepers engaged in demonstrations in Kokkley, using livestock trucks to block the thoroughfare. This protest was aimed at denouncing the restrictions preventing the transportation of their animals, particularly as some other entities appeared to be exempt from such measures.
The timing of these protests coincides with recent decisions from the Nineveh Governorate, which instituted health quarantines across 22 livestock fields in Kokkley following reports of significant infections of foot-and-mouth disease. These developments have resulted in substantial losses for the breeders, prompting calls for urgent interventions to safeguard their livestock assets.
