Kurdistan Bans Fishing for 3 Months: Key Reasons and Impact

Kurdistan Region Implements 3-Month Fishing Ban for Reproductive Season

The Ministry of Agriculture in the Kurdistan Region has announced a prohibition on fishing activities for a duration of three months, coinciding with the reproductive season of aquatic life. This decision reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices.

According to a document from the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Sources of the Kurdistan Regional Government, the fishing ban will take effect on March 10, 2025, and will remain in place until June 20, 2025.

The Ministry emphasized that this ban encompasses various harmful fishing methods that threaten water ecosystems, including the use of electricity, toxic substances, explosives, and fine mesh nets, which can cause significant damage to aquatic life. It reinforced that such methods are strictly prohibited at all times.

This initiative aims to protect the breeding cycles of fish and ensure the longevity of the region’s marine resources, thereby supporting both environmental conservation and the livelihoods dependent on sustainable fishing practices.
