Kurdish Deputy Alleges Barzani Government Exploiting People’s Hunger for Political Gain

Political Tensions in Kurdistan Over Economic Crisis

In a recent statement, Karwan Ali Yarouis, deputy of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, asserted that the Kurdistan Regional Government is leveraging the ongoing economic hardships and hunger among its citizens for political leverage. Yarouis pointed out that the Kurdish population is bearing the brunt of the unresolved conflicts between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government, particularly evidenced by the fact that government employees have gone without salaries for over 70 days.

He emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to the crisis, noting that the ongoing discussions between technical delegations from both parties have yet to yield significant results. Yarouis stated, “If the federal government and the region cannot resolve their differences through negotiation, they must turn to the House of Representatives. Should parliament prove unable to find a resolution, the Federal Court should act as the adjudicative authority in this matter.” He identified financial disputes as a core issue fueling the disagreements, underlining that a resolution demands both a clear political will and firm decision-making.

Furthermore, Yarouis indicated that genuine political direction is critical for progress; “If serious guidance is provided for solving these issues, an agreement can be reached. However, without this political commitment, advancement will remain elusive.” He criticized the regional government’s approach, suggesting that attempting to exploit the dire living conditions in Kurdistan to pressurize the federal government is inconsistent with constitutional, legal, and ethical standards.

Yarouis concluded by calling on the relevant authorities to fulfill their responsibilities and alleviate the plight of citizens in the region.
