The Ministry of Water Resources has finalized a contract with Italian partners to enhance and support Iraq’s national strategy for water and land development, as well as to formulate a comprehensive map of water sector projects projected up to the year 2035.
Minister of Water Resources Aoun Dhiab Abdullah highlighted that the ministry had previously established the national strategy for the management of water and land resources, initiating the first phase of this framework in 2015. This strategy serves as a critical roadmap for managing these essential resources. He remarked that the recent contract with the Italian parties is vital in addressing the impacts of climate change on water availability, which has significantly affected the region, including Iraq. Additionally, changes in the Tigris and Euphrates river systems due to developmental activities in neighboring countries further influence Iraq’s water imports and necessitate ongoing adaptation efforts.
Abdullah emphasized the ministry’s commitment to employing scientific solutions to overcome challenges presented by these changes. The focus remains on prioritizing water resources amid broader strategic issues, notably drinking water availability, agricultural and industrial uses, as well as the sustainability of marshlands. The aim is to devise a sustainable plan that ensures adequate water supply in both quantity and quality.
Furthermore, the Minister pointed out the significance of updating the study, which will serve as both a scientific and practical framework for integrated resource management, as well as a roadmap for private sector water projects extending to 2035. He reiterated that the success of these initiatives hinges on cooperative efforts among various ministries and governmental agencies associated with water management. Collaboration with civil society representatives, farmers, experts, and the private sector is crucial, alongside community awareness initiatives regarding the project’s importance and the collective pursuit of shared objectives.
In addition, the Minister of Water Resources outlined several proactive measures already undertaken to implement the study’s recommendations. This includes the installation of pumping stations at Lake Al-Tharthar aimed at alleviating shortages in the Euphrates River by facilitating water transfer from the Tigris. Additional efforts focus on addressing remote areas and managing river systems to optimize water distribution while also eliminating unauthorized use of irrigation systems.
