Iraq’s South Gas Company Set to Enhance Energy Security with New Gas Conveyor Line Contract

Economy News – Baghdad

The South Gas Company, under the Ministry of Oil, has announced its progress toward establishing a gas conveyor line aimed at optimizing the supply of imported gas through floating platforms. This initiative aligns with the government’s objective to create alternative channels that adequately supply gas to electrical stations.

There is significant involvement from Prime Minister Mohamed Shi’a Al-Sudani and Minister of Oil Hayyan Abdul-Ghani regarding gas development in Iraq, particularly given the nation’s urgent need to secure fuel for gas stations and reduce reliance on imports.

Iraq had previously depended on Iranian gas to supply these stations via two key import routes: one located centrally and the other in the southern region. However, the cessation of these supplies has prompted the government to seek additional gas outlets while simultaneously advancing toward self-sufficiency.

Efforts are also underway to establish a platform for importing liquefied gas, utilizing innovative technologies that can expedite the process through the use of floating platforms and the construction of a vector and pipeline network.

In light of these developments, it is anticipated that a contract will soon be awarded for the construction of a 40 km conveyor line that will connect the floating platforms to national gas pipelines, thereby facilitating the delivery of liquefied gas to gas stations. An official authorization is in place for the South Gas Company to finalize this contract, with the Ministries of Planning and Finance tasked with overseeing the necessary funding allocations for the project.

Additionally, Abdel-Baqi disclosed that negotiations are occurring with international firms focused on gas imports, highlighting an offer from a company based in the UAE which proposes to complete the project within a feasible timeline.
