Iraq’s Ports Surge: Container Handling Hits 4 Million as Economic Transformation Begins

Enhancing Container Handling at Iraqi Ports

The General Company for Iraqi Ports has announced a significant advancement in its operational capacity, reporting an increase in container handling to 4 million units. This achievement is part of a broader strategy aimed at elevating the efficiency of port operations and logistics.

Since the initiation of its developmental plan in 2020, the company has focused on enhancing both its technical capabilities and its port infrastructure. This concerted effort has led to the handling of over 30 million tons of various goods last year, which included the successful management of 1,000,800 containers.

The volume of commercial activity has necessitated improvements in treasury resources, infrastructure, and digital operations. These developments are designed to streamline the processes for merchants and operators while ensuring that goods move swiftly through the port facilities.

In 2023, the company embarked on a second phase of its strategic plan, which includes the establishment of industrial operations at the Umm Qasr port. This has resulted in the production of oils and animal feed, with capabilities of generating 3,000 tons, including a daily output of 240 tons of feed and 600 tons of vegetable oils. The third shipment of these oils has commenced, accumulating approximately 400,000 tons for export.

The strategies in place at the General Company for Iraqi Ports are reflective of global trends observed in renowned port facilities such as Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port, and Singapore. The future vision for the Al-Faw Port project envisions an integrated economic zone meant to bolster port activity and, consequently, contribute to national economic development.
