New Refining Unit Added to Maysan’s Refinery
On Monday, the Iraqi Ministry of Oil announced the strategic addition of a new refining unit at Maysan’s refinery, enhancing its capacity by 70,000 barrels per day.
Continuous Development Initiatives
Adnan Mohamed Hammoud, the undersecretary for liquidation affairs, emphasized that the Ministry of Oil is steadfast in executing its strategic plans as part of the government’s agenda. These initiatives aim to enhance the refining sector and maximize national production of oil derivatives to meet local consumption needs while facilitating surplus exports.
Hammoud noted the significant support this sector receives from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs Hayyan Abdel-Ghani Al-Sawad during his recent visit to Maysan’s refinery.
Expansion of Refinery Capacity
The newly established unit, adhering to global specifications (Euro 5), will elevate the refinery’s total production capacity to 110,000 barrels per day. This development is expected to effectively address the oil derivative requirements of Maysan Governorate and its neighboring regions.
Hammoud detailed that the expansion project includes the installation of additional units, such as hydrous and improved gasoline units, an FCC unit, a gas oil unit, and a white oil unit. Furthermore, it will encompass environmentally friendly service units. He reiterated the crucial role of this refinery in fulfilling local market demands for oil derivatives and its essential support for various industrial sectors.
Focus on Operational Stability
To ensure operational efficiency and a consistent supply of oil products, industry leaders are urged to intensify their efforts in stabilizing the production process. The refinery currently operates at 40,000 barrels per day and is recognized as a fundamental component of the southern refineries company.
In a recent meeting, Hammoud was joined by the Director of the Foreign Refinery Production Authority, the refinery director, and key engineering staff to assess the progress of ongoing works and discuss the implementation of development plans. The meeting included inspections of production and technical units, highlighting the commitment to enhancing the facility’s productivity.
This development reflects the Iraqi government’s ongoing efforts to bolster its oil refining capabilities while ensuring the sustainability and growth of the sector in alignment with national economic objectives.
