Infrastructure Developments in Iraq: Key Projects and Timelines
On Monday, the Ministry of Construction and Housing announced the schedules for the completion of several crucial infrastructure projects aimed at alleviating traffic congestion, including the Hamrin Bridge in Diyala and the Baghdad-Kirkuk road. Additionally, significant work is underway on the pilgrimage route in Najaf.
Nabil Al-Saffar, the ministry’s spokesperson, confirmed in an official statement that all projects designed to reduce traffic jams are expected to reach completion within the current year. A highlight among these is the Sarravia Bridge, which is slated for completion by the end of this month. Other notable projects include the Al-Toubaji and Al-Tala’i bridges, along with a new link connecting the Muhammad Al-Qasim road to the Baghdad-Kirkuk road, and enhancements to the Al-Nisour Square project. Specifically, Tunnel No. 4 and Tunnel No. 5 are anticipated to be finalized by mid-year.
In terms of major projects along the Tigris River, the Ministry plans to complete the second Jadriya Bridge, the second Al-Sarafi Bridge, and the Gaza Bridge, all scheduled for the second half of 2025.
Beyond Baghdad, the Ministry is actively pursuing several vital projects across various governorates. This includes the Hamrin Bridge in Diyala, recognized as Iraq’s longest bridge at over 7 kilometers, which is expected to finish this year. The Baghdad-Kirkuk road, which spans 400 kilometers, is also in progress; segments in Diyala and Kirkuk have been completed, with work continuing on the remaining sections. Moreover, there are over 70 ongoing projects within the infrastructure development plans across various governorates. The Najaf pilgrimage route is another critical project, where the first phase, covering 50 kilometers, is anticipated to conclude this year.
The Ministry has reiterated its commitment to completing these projects within the established timelines. The enhancements aim to improve traffic conditions and fortify road networks and bridges, thereby supporting economic growth and commercial activity throughout Iraq.
