Iraq’s Natural Gas Reserves: A Strategic Asset for Energy Generation
Ezzat Saber, the Undersecretary of the Iraqi Oil Ministry, underscored the significant natural gas reserves in the Kurdistan Region during recent statements. He emphasized that the Jammal field holds the distinction of being Iraq’s largest and most vital gas field, noted for the exceptional purity of its gas, which reaches 97%.
“The Kurdistan Region is endowed with vast gas resources, including some of the cleanest forms of natural gas. This positions natural gas as a strategic asset that can be optimally utilized for the benefit of our citizens,” Saber stated.
He further highlighted that the Beauty field ranks among Iraq’s largest gas fields, characterized by its high-purity gas that is suitable for direct application.
In terms of energy production, Saber pointed out that Iraq relies on natural gas to generate approximately 45% of its electrical power. The country possesses reserves that can support the utilization of this resource for up to a century.
Despite these substantial capabilities, Iraq continues to grapple with an ongoing electricity crisis, with services failing to provide uninterrupted power supply throughout the day.
Saber explained that addressing this issue necessitates more than merely increasing gas production; it requires a comprehensive restructuring of the electrical sector coupled with enhancements to consumption practices. He stressed the importance of collaboration between the government and the public to maximize the efficient deployment of gas resources.
Additionally, Saber mentioned that the Iraqi government is actively exploring alternatives to Iranian gas, with the potential of importing natural gas from Qatar as a viable option when required.
This focus on restructuring and resource management underscores Iraq’s commitment to leveraging its natural gas reserves to resolve long-standing electricity challenges while enhancing energy security.
