Iraq’s Commitment to International Public Debt Management Policies
Geneva – The Minister of Finance, Taif Sami, reaffirmed the Iraqi government’s dedication to adopting robust international policies for effective public debt management. This statement was made during her participation in the fourteenth session of the International Religious Management Conference, running from March 17 to 19, 2025, organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
During her address, Sami emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to implementing the recommendations stemming from the conference. She highlighted Iraq’s effort to enhance financial and economic performance with a goal of fostering sustainable development and improving the economic well-being of its citizens.
Sami described the conference as a crucial platform for discussing methodologies to enhance debt management and establish sound financial policies. She expressed appreciation for the organizational efforts put forth by UNCTAD, recognizing the event as an invaluable opportunity for exchanging experiences and reviewing current trends in debt management.
As part of her engagements at the conference, Finance Minister Sami met with Rebecca Cringan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD. Their discussions focused on collaborative opportunities between Iraq and UNCTAD regarding debt management and the advancement of sustainable financial policies. Sami underlined the significance of the technical assistance provided by UNCTAD to developing nations, noting Iraq’s intention to leverage international best practices in debt management.
Furthermore, Minister Sami held discussions with Paulo Gentiloni, former Director of Economic Affairs at UNCTAD. The dialogue centered on prevailing economic challenges and the necessity for developing adaptable financial policies that contribute to economic stability. Sami reiterated the Iraqi government’s eagerness to implement international best practices in managing public debt, acknowledging the advantages of learning from European experiences.
Sami’s participation aligns with the Iraqi government’s broader strategy to refine public debt management mechanisms and formulate financial strategies that align with global best practices.
