Iraq’s Environment Ministry Unveils Stringent Measures to Combat Pollution While Harnessing 70% of Associated Gas

Economy Update – Baghdad

The Iraqi Ministry of Environment has announced stringent legal measures aimed at addressing pollution-related activities, highlighting that the country has successfully utilized over 70% of associated gas resources.

Undersecretary Jassem Al-Falahi stated that the ministry is actively fulfilling its supervisory responsibilities alongside other critical institutions such as Parliament, the Financial Supervision Bureau, and the Federal Integrity Authority.

He elaborated that the ministry is monitoring pollution-related activities closely, employing a systematic approach that begins with warnings, escalates to fines, and may ultimately lead to judicial referrals. Al-Falahi noted a significant legal challenge involving pollution generated by the public sector, where government institutions play a pivotal role in escalating pollution levels.

Moreover, he emphasized a concerted effort to diversify Iraq’s economy to mitigate crises linked to overdependence on oil production, especially given the volatility of global demand. The significant utilization of over 70% of associated gas contributes not only to the generation of clean energy but also aids in reducing gas flaring, protecting the environment, minimizing resource waste, and decreasing the reliance on imported gas for power generation.

Al-Falahi further pointed out that the Ministry of Environment is committed to fostering renewable energy initiatives and environmentally sustainable projects as part of its broader strategy to combat environmental pollution and promote sustainable development.
