Iraq’s Environment Minister Announces Major Investments in Green Projects to Combat Pollution

Iraq’s Commitment to Environmental Investment

In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, Iraq’s Minister of Environment, Halo Military, announced on Wednesday that the country is prioritizing investments in environmental projects while actively working to reduce pollution levels.

During a discussion at the Iraq Energy Conference, Al-Askari emphasized the importance of the government’s decision to separate the Ministry of Health from the Ministry of Environment, describing it as a step in the right direction. He noted that many developed nations play pivotal roles in addressing climate issues, and Iraq aims to follow suit.

Al-Askari remarked, "Iraq is a stable nation poised for investment in environmental initiatives." He highlighted the strengths of the ministry, stating, "We have substantial energy resources, a clear vision, and are shifting our approach. The ministry’s role is supervisory, facilitating economic growth, especially in the realm of the green economy."

Furthermore, he underscored the cabinet’s decision to establish a waste-to-energy transfer facility as a notable achievement. He mentioned another significant initiative led by the ministry: the creation of the first carbon economy company in Iraq.

In line with directives from the Prime Minister, the Ministry has focused on identifying and addressing environmental challenges. This includes implementing filtering systems in laboratories and eliminating waste incineration practices.

Al-Askari pointed out the ongoing efforts to mitigate environmental pollutants, clarifying that desertification is a broader issue affecting the region and the globe, rather than being isolated to Iraq. He noted Iraq’s involvement in international efforts against desertification, including participation in conferences discussing these critical issues, alongside contributions to the green initiative launched by Saudi Arabia.

Additionally, the Minister highlighted that climate change is a pressing global concern, with Iraq taking the lead in the Group of 77 alongside China to prepare for the upcoming climate summit in Brazil.

Conclusion

Iraq’s strategic focus on environmental investment reflects its commitment to sustainable development and aligns with global efforts to tackle climate change. The recent initiatives signal a transformative approach, positioning the country as an emerging player in the green economy.
