Iraq’s Energy Crisis Deepens: Impact of U.S. Sanctions on Gas

The Parliamentary Energy Committee has announced that the termination of the U.S. exemption on Iranian gas is likely to exacerbate the ongoing energy crisis in Iraq.

Committee Chairman Muhammad Nuri Al-Abd Rabbo outlined the significant challenges facing Iraq’s electricity sector, particularly due to an increase in demand. He emphasized the importance of formulating strategic plans to advance the various energy projects already outlined.

Al-Abd Rabbo further highlighted that “the future of electricity in Iraq is contingent upon the diversification and enhancement of energy sources.”

He warned about the detrimental consequences of eliminating the Iranian gas exemption, stating it may worsen the energy crisis significantly.

In light of these challenges, Al-Abd Rabbo noted that Iraq is actively exploring alternatives to secure stable electricity supplies moving forward.
